Hindu nationalists claim that ancient Indians had airplanes, stem cell technology, and the internet
By Sanjay KumarFeb. 13, 2019 , 10:55 AM

New Delhi—The most widely discussed talk at the Indian Science Congress, a government-funded annual jamboree held in Jalandhar in January, wasn't about space exploration or information technology, areas in which India has made rapid progress. Instead, the talk celebrated a story in the Hindu epic Mahabharata about a woman who gave birth to 100 children, citing it as evidence that India's ancient Hindu civilization had developed advanced reproductive technologies. Just as surprising as the claim was the distinguished pedigree of the scientist who made it: chemist G. Nageshwar Rao, vice-chancellor of Andhra University in Visakhapatnam. "Stem cell research was done in this country thousands of years ago," Rao said.

His talk was widely met with ridicule. But Rao is hardly the only Indian scientist to make such claims. In recent years, "experts" have said ancient Indians had spacecraft, the internet, and nuclear weapons—long before Western science came on the scene.

Such claims and other forms of pseudoscience rooted in Hindu nationalism have been on the rise since Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014. They're not just an embarrassment, some researchers say, but a threat to science and education that stifles critical thinking and could hamper India's development. "Modi has initiated what may be called ‘Project Assault on Scientific Rationality,’" says Gauhar Raza, former chief scientist at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) here, a conglomerate of almost 40 national labs. "A religio-mythical culture is being propagated in the country's scientific institutions aggressively."

Some blame the rapid rise at least in part on Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA), the science wing of Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), a massive conservative movement that aims to turn India into a Hindu nation and is the ideological parent of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party. VIBHA aims to educate the masses about science and technology and harness research to stimulate India's development, but it also promotes "Swadeshi" (indigenous) science and tries to connect modern science to traditional knowledge and Hindu spirituality.

VIBHA receives generous government funding and is active in 23 of India's 29 states, organizing huge science fairs and other events; it has 20,000 so-called "team members" to spread its ideas and 100,000 volunteers—including many in the highest echelons of Indian science.

VIBHA's advisory board includes Vijay Kumar Saraswat, former head of Indian defense research and now chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University here. The former chairs of India's Space Commission and its Atomic Energy Commission are VIBHA "patrons." Structural biologist Shekhar Mande, director-general of CSIR, is VIBHA's vice president.

Saraswat—who says he firmly believes in the power of gemstones to influence wellbeing and destiny—is proud of the achievements of ancient Hindu science: "We should rediscover Indian systems which existed thousands of years back," he says. Mande shares that pride. "We are a race which is not inferior to any other race in the world," he says. "Great things have happened in this part of the world." Mande insists that VIBHA is not antiscientific, however: "We want to tell people you have to be rational in your life and not believe in irrational myths." He does not see a rise of pseudoscience in the past 4 years—"We have always had that"—and says part of the problem is that the press is now paying more attention to the occasional bizarre claim. "If journalists don't report it, actually that would be perfect," he says.

But others say there is little doubt that pseudoscience is on the rise—even at the highest levels of government. Modi, who was an RSS pracharak, or propagandist, for 12 years, claimed in 2014 that the transplantation of the elephant head of the god Ganesha to a human—a tale told in ancient epics—was a great achievement of Indian surgery millennia ago, and has made claims about stem cells similar to Rao's. At last year's Indian Science Congress, science minister Harsh Vardhan, a medical doctor and RSS member, said, incorrectly, that physicist Stephen Hawking had stated that the Vedas include theories superior to Albert Einstein's equation E=mc2. "It's one thing for a crackpot to say something like that, but it's a very bad example for people in authority to do so. It is deplorable," Venki Ramakrishnan, the Indian-born president of the Royal Society in London and a 2009 Nobel laureate in chemistry, tells Science. (Vardhan has declined to explain his statement so far and did not respond to an interview request from Science.)

Critics say pseudoscience is creeping into science funding and education. In 2017, Vardhan decided to fund research at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology here to validate claims that panchagavya, a concoction that includes cow urine and dung, is a remedy for a wide array of ailments—a notion many scientists dismiss. And in January 2018, higher education minister Satya Pal Singh dismissed Charles Darwin's evolution theory and threatened to remove it from school and college curricula. "Nobody, including our ancestors, in written or oral [texts], has said that they ever saw an ape turning into a human being," Singh said.

Those remarks triggered a storm of protest; in a rare display of unity, India's three premier science academies said removing evolution from school curricula, or diluting it with "non-scientific explanations or myths," would be "a retrograde step." In other instances, too, scientists are pushing back against the growing tide of pseudoscience. But doing so can be dangerous. In the past 5 years, four prominent fighters against superstition and pseudoscientific ideas and practices have been murdered, including Narendra Dabholkar, a physician, and M. M. Kalburgi, former vice-chancellor of Kannada University in Hampi. Ongoing police investigations have linked their killers to Hindu fundamentalist organizations.

Some Indian scientists may be susceptible to nonscientific beliefs because they view science as a 9-to-5 job, says Ashok Sahni, a renowned paleontologist and emeritus professor at Panjab University in Chandigarh. "Their religious beliefs don't dovetail with science," he says, and outside working hours those beliefs may hold sway. A tradition of deference to teachers and older persons may also play a role, he adds. "Freedom to question authority, to question writings, that's [an] intrinsic part of science," Ramakrishnan adds. Rather than focusing on the past, India should focus on its scientific future, he says—and drastically hike its research funding.

The grip of Hindu nationalism on Indian society is about to be tested. Two dozen opposition parties have joined forces against Modi for elections that will be held before the end of May. A loss by Modi would bring "some change," says Prabir Purkayastha, vice president of the All India People's Science Network in Madurai, a liberal science advocacy movement with some 400,000 members across the country that opposes VIBHA's ideology. But the tide of pseudoscience may not retreat quickly, he says. "I don't think this battle is going to die down soon, because institutions have been weakened and infected."

Let me be as blunt and direct as I can be. Western civilization is in a war. We should frankly test every person here who is of a Muslim background, and if they believe in sharia, they should be deported. Sharia is incompatible with Western civilization. Modern Muslims who have given up Sharia—glad to have them as citizens. Perfectly happy to have them next door.

“Rationality” as explained on the internetz. One has to understand the opportunity cost of such a view of both rationality and skepticism. No one is being skeptical of skepticism. No one is doubting their doubt. Thats foundational to the theory—if you take it seriously.
Postmodern type deconstruction that doesn’t realize its eaten itself. That is to say its self-contradictory.
The inability to see the limits of skepticism. Skeptics throughout the ages have been faulted for being academic and ivory tower. For instance, Harris’ suggesting life is deterministic, but living like free will (and presumably human dignity, justice, and rights) are real things. Thats a fundamental cognitive dissonance of the highest order.

The assumption that things one can’t see aren’t true, even though one can see and in fact daily rely on their existence is absurd.

The same logic applied to Gravity, Friction, or other forces would be thrown out and this assertion should be thrown out too.

Not to mention, materialism and physicalism fail to understand the human personality fully. Life is more than skin and bones. Life is more than biology, chemistry, and physics. Otherwise, libraries and bookstores would be half their size.

Anyone who thinks Descartes is the kind of skeptic that skepticism that exists on the internet. Descartes deconstructed and re-constructed. There isn’t much of an element of understanding the necessity of re-constructing so we can live our daily lives and survive. Descartes used skepticism precisely to push knowledge and civilization forward—I think therefore I am—helped the cause of pointing to identity rather than navel gazing and ivory tower. Descartes used skepticism to bring extreme forms of skepticism to bear. That is to say Descartes form of skepticism is exactly the opposite in orientation as internet skepticism or modern day skepticism.

If rationality was as reductive as internet skeptics proclaim, we would all be Ayn Rand. The thing is Aristotle viewed logic and rationality through a different lens. And it’s precisely this lens that is the foundation of the Western legal tradition. Reductive forms of logic lost. It not rationality, but reductive rationality, and thats a whole different ball of wax my friend.

The evidence for God is everywhere…you just have to pay attention.

I actually agree with the idea that welfare and charity are bad. But then again, I think that welfare and charity are part of the reason for human civilization's decline into decadence (along with most religion, for that matter), and in any case this assertion makes Hovind a bit of a hypocrite given the nature of his stated faith.

[Note: these are all different posts Andy was making within hours of each other; he links to articles in each]

Right after Donald Trump’s election, the SPLC really stoked panic. A pro-gay Episcopal church in Indiana was vandalized w/“Heil Trump,” a swastika, & an anti-gay slur. Turns out it was the gay organ player who did it. He was only charged w/a misdemeanor.

Days after the Pittsburgh massacre, Trump supporters were blamed for Nazi vandalism at a Brooklyn synagogue & fires in a Jewish community. Turns out the perpetrator was a gay black man who had worked with city council on an initiative to fight hate crimes.

One week before the presidential election, a black church in Mississippi was burned in an arson attack. “Vote Trump” was written on the building. After much panic, an investigation revealed that the man responsible was a church member. Andrew McClinton: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/12/22/miss-black-church-fire-another-highly-publicized-suspected-hate-crime-debunked-police-say/ …

In Nov 2016 a Muslim student at the University of Louisiana said two white racist Trump supporters brutally assaulted her, ripped off her hijab, & robbed her. The story went viral. It was a lie. Media never identified her by name after hoax was revealed.

I remember that Trump & his supporters were blamed for a spate of anti-Semitic, KKK & Nazi graffiti on the campus of Nassau Community College in Long Island in late 2016. The student responsible was Jasskirat Saini: https://abc7ny.com/news/man-charged-after-swastikas-found-at-long-island-college/1666228/ …

In Dec 2016 a Muslim woman said she was attacked by 3 white Trump supporters in NYC on the subway. She said they tried to rip off her hijab. Yasmin Seweid lied. CAIR said Muslims are under tremendous “stress & pressure” resulting in incidents like this.

In Sep. 2018 a black woman in Long Island said Trump supporters confronted her & told her “she didn’t belong here.” Her car tire was slashed the next day & a hateful note was left behind saying “go home.” Adwoa Lewis made up the whole story. https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Woman-Who-Found-Hateful-Note-on-Car-After-Teens-Yelled-Trump-2016-Made-Up-Story-Police-493375511.html …

In Nov 2018 students at Goucher College demanded social justice training & safe spaces after racist, Nazi, & KKK graffiti was found on campus. Someone even wrote the names of black students. Trump was blamed. Fynn Arthur, a black student, was responsible.

[Responding to someone who claimed that racists are ignorant]

Your claim is that racists are ignorant people. They do not realize that all people are really the same, but you are not a racist because you realize that all people are the same. It seems that your position on racism is important to you, since you were so disgusted with the racists. But it turns out that your position cannot withstand the slightest scrutiny, and you really have no justification for it. You assume a position of knowledge and enlightenment, but you are just as ignorant as the racists.

You are careless. You are unintelligent. You are ignorant. You present yourself as someone who possesses knowledge, but you have not really thought through the things that you believe, even those things that are important to you. Thus you are also dishonest and hypocritical. You are usually able to get away with it because other people are also like you, and they agree with you. But now that I have exposed you, where are you going to run?

You are a non-Christian. What is your basis for denying God and Jesus Christ? You say that Christians are irrational, but have you thought through your own position? Or is it just as careless, foolish, and dishonest as your reason for affirming racial equality? You see, you think that you are intellectually competent, informed, and honest. But you are none of these things. You are stupid, ignorant, and dishonest. And your rejection of the Christian faith is also stupid, ignorant, and dishonest.

The Bible tells me that you know about the Christian God, and if we continue this conversation, I will show you more and more that this is the case. But you are too stupid and wicked to admit it. You are dishonest, so you try to suppress what you know. But God’s reality and precepts are so evident that you cannot consistently deny him. Perhaps your attitude toward racism is a distorted effect of this knowledge that is built into your very being.

You think I am harsh in speaking to you like this. But I am the best friend that you could have. Think about it: I can take apart everything that you believe in a matter of seconds, and this means that intellectually and spiritually, you are in a lot of trouble. Your whole life is a lie. And if you cannot even fool me, do you think that you can fool God? The Bible says that his wrath is poured out against people who suppress their knowledge about him – people like you. You are in a lot of danger right now. Your only hope is to abandon your pride, and admit your foolishness and wickedness, and call out to Jesus Christ — he is the only one who can save you. Let us discuss this further, for if God has mercy on you, this is what you will do.

Very short question and a very long trip for answer. You know that you are born in the Christ Michael kingdom. A creator son (there are 700,000 of them). First after death, one part of you, your thought Ajuster this divine part that you have received at about 5.5 years old at your first moral act will leave you and joints HIs Father God for a while, Your other part, your immortal soul that has developed with the help of your thought adjuster will be transported to the system universe created by your Christ Michael where you are going to be reassembled with you Thought adjuster, (resurrected) instructed, and trained. On there you will believe that you are already on Paradise because you will find that there are 10 categories of life compared to two on earth (vegetable and animal) moreover you will find that the periodic table of elements is now 200 instead of 100 on earth. Everything is beauty. nicer and nicer. You live on architectural spheres created by our Christ, After instructions on 8 of those spheres you are going to be transported to the capital of this local system (Jerusem), After a long stay there you are going to be transported to one of the 100 constellations created by Michel where you are going to be schooled and trained on 771 spheres, Being graduated from the constellation you are going to be transported to the capital of the kingdom of Christ where you are going to be trained and instructed on additional 491 spheres, Remark here that each time you were transported on a new sphere you were given a new body to better fit your new intellect. On or around this capital there are now 500 elements this imply much more beauty, Before leaving the kingdom of Christ you are going to graduate as first stage spirit, 6 more to conquer. Then you will be transported to one of the minor sector of the milky way, then on one of the 10 major sector of the Milky Way to find more instructions and training then comes the capital of the Milky Way with 800 elements and 491 spheres where to learn and be trained.

Then come the very long transport towards 1 billion spheres circling around paradise in seven circuits, each of them with 1000 elements, imagine the beauty. unfortunately you will have to learn and be trained on each of them. You will finally reach the last one as a 6 stage spirit before being transported for the last time to paradise. You do not perceive time during those transports .When you awake in Paradise you will stay awake up for eternity.

Why all this training? on earth you learn to be either a doctor an engineer or an accountant

now you have learned to be a son of God, After your long stay on Paradise. You will be graduated as a 7th stage spirit before departing for somewhere in the universe to instruct and train the new inhabitants, As you see God need you he need us to grow up His universe.

We were told go and multiply yourself exactly for this reason.

I have some bad news for you all, I have reproduced. I have been happily married for 19 years to a former Levi's model from Mexico. I have never been divorced. We have two children, a girl age 11 and a boy age 14. Since I was financially successful in business, I no longer need to work for a living and now have the time to homeschool my kids. I currently divide my time between my current business, which I run from home, and homeschooling. I teach my kids to think for themselves and not accept any beliefs without skepticism.

I have been to Europe. I spent 6 months traveling around the world with my wife, about half of which was in Europe. My parents are from Hungary and they also have a European perspective. I have a good understanding of European history and culture, and the mistaken assumption of Horsefeathers is that prostitution is banned in America because of the puritanical and Victorian values that America got from England. But New Zealand has these same influences and has some of the world's most liberal prostitution laws.

I am not ugly and have never been out of shape. I was rejected by American women because I am a decent person. American women, being the scum of the earth, naturally reject decent men.

One of my frustrations with the internet is that people hide behind pseudonyms and are all talk and no action. My user name, fschmidt, is short for my real name, Franklin Schmidt. I live in El Paso, Texas. On the love-shy forum, I encourage men to stop complaining and to take action to improve their situation. This Glorified One is coming after you. Do not expect a humble peasant with a sheep under his arm, who would suffer your insults and abuse. But he is GOD, full of terrifying glory and power. He has marked you even now, and he will come after you. At a time of his choosing, he will take your life, and he will throw you into a lake of fire, where he will torture you forever and ever. You will curse him, and he will laugh at you. You will beg him to annihilate you, but he will ignore your pleas. He will sustain your existence so that you will suffer all the extreme agony that he has in store for you, and that he will inflict upon you in all its intensity through eternity.

This is the fate of everyone who does not worship Jesus Christ. You exclaim, “This is cruel and unusual punishment!” But you have been cruel to his people, and now he gives you your just reward. And it is hardly unusual, as you will have millions of companions in hell, too many for you to count. But take no comfort in this, as none of them will have even a second of rest from their suffering to help alleviate yours.

Quote# 142467

[Regarding 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18: "Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words."]

The passage is often read at funerals, with the intent to encourage. However, Paul forbids universal application, since he contrasts the way that Christians should grieve against the way that all others grieve, since the rest of humankind have "no hope." He is writing to Christians about Christians. If the audience includes non-Christians, or if non-Christians are among the dead, then the doctrine is not nearly as comforting. The doctrine should not comfort the non-Christians who mourn, since they will not share in the glory of the return of Christ, or in the resurrection of Christians. And the doctrine should not encourage anyone about the deceased non-Christians, since death spells the commencement of a kind of suffering for them that strains our ability to fathom, although we applaud the justice of it.

Even as Paul addresses those who might be in mourning, and even as he writes to the Christian living about the Christian dead, he makes an attack on the unbelievers. Unless a minister has warrant to assume that he is speaking to Christians about Christians, he is a liar if he applies the doctrine of the glorious resurrection of the saints as if it applies to all in the audience, and at a funeral, as if it applies to the one in the coffin. If the minister is aware that his audience includes non-Christians, and if he is aware that the deceased was an unbeliever, then what excuse does he have to say anything other than, "Look! God is punishing this man – your father, your husband, your son, your friend, this relative of yours – even now...God is punishing him, torturing him, burning him up even now! Your wife, your mother, your sister, your daughter...she is now screaming out in pain and agony! She is crying for help, but there is only endless suffering before her, forever. And if you do not repent, you will likewise perish! Repent, for soon it will be your time to face the Lord!"

In other words, since his chosen people are saved from God’s wrath and will therefore never experience this aspect of divine glory, God made the reprobates so that he can show off all that he is by damning them, punishing them, and torturing them in hell. This proceeds from his redemptive love. He does this precisely because he loves those he has chosen to receive his mercy. If I want to show my son how skillful I am with a rifle, I am not going to shoot him in the face with it. No, I will shoot a deer or a bear, whose life is dispensable. And I will do this because I love my son and want him to know more about me.

This is God’s love, and this love always wins, because God always wins. And this means that, because God is love, the reprobates – those who are non-Christians and will remain non-Christians because of God’s foreordination – can never escape hellfire. No matter how hard non-Christians strive to save themselves, God will catch them and send them to hell, where he will actively torture them with endless pain and anguish. God’s love (for himself, for his Son, and for his chosen people) guarantees the eternal damnation and suffering of all non-Christians. He will see to it that it happens.

The longer Italy stays in the EU, the more entrenched “European values” (infinite niggers, infinite austerity, infinite Bolshevism) will become in our own laws. With a bone-chilling bloodlessness, Barrack on Tuesday defended the Saudi government’s murder of Post contributing columnist Jamal Khashoggi. Asked at a Milken Institute gathering in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, about the murder, Barrack replied that “whatever happened in Saudi Arabia, the atrocities in America are equal or worse than the atrocities in Saudi Arabia.” He added: “For us to dictate what we think is the moral code there .?.?. Incredibly, that wasn’t all. “The problem with what’s happened with the Khashoggi incident is the same problems of the West misunderstanding the East” for a century, Barrack said. “The West is confused at the rule of the law, doesn’t understand what the rule of law is in the kingdom.”

Quote# 142447

We must do our best to stop the Devil in his tracks. I remember when a relative bought a pair of high-heel shoes for my 11 year old daughter. I told her to take them back to the store. I felt they were not appropriate for a young girl to wear.

One day I heard the same relative tell my daughter that a person's birthday determines their gifts in life. I stopped her immediately and said, "That's New Age garbage, please don't bring that into my home." That's what we all need to do, i.e., take a stand for what is true and right. We all adopt wrong thinking at times since we are surrounded by heresy in society. Peter told Jesus that he would fight to the death to prevent Him from being crucified. Jesus called Peter, Satan, because Peter had adopted some demonic thinking (Mark 8:33). May we all SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES as Jesus commanded in John 5:39 so that we can try (test) the spirits as 1st John 4:1 teaches.

My relative had gotten into astrology. By the way, astrology is witchcraft. All New Age is witchcraft. Witchcraft is seeking help or guidance from spiritual sources other than God or His Word. Yoga is witchcraft. Palm reading is witchcraft. Séances are witchcraft. Horoscopes are witchcraft. I wasn't trying to be mean to my relative, but the Devil had crept into her life and I didn't want her influencing my family for wrong.

A root of bitterness can destroy a person, a family, a church, or a nation. The Federal Reserve system which was started in 1913 is a root of bitterness. It has been the downfall of this great nation financially. Abortion is a root of bitterness. Alcohol is a root of bitterness, it has destroyed countless millions upon millions of lives. Playboy is a root of bitterness, which has destroyed marriages and families all across the world. These are the poisonous roots of evil which destroy lives and ultimately bring God's judgment (Romans 1:32). Hollywood is a root of bitterness. Walt Disney is a root of bitterness. MTV is a root of bitterness. CMT is a root of bitterness. Cigarettes are a root of bitterness.

Illegal drugs are a root of bitterness. The corrupt Pharmaceutical industry is a root of bitterness. Corrupt and evil politicians are a root of bitterness. Crooked judges are a root of bitterness. The Council on Foreign Relations is a root of bitterness. The United Nations is a root of bitterness. The World Bank is a root of bitterness. The IMF organization is a root of bitterness. Gambling is a root of bitterness. Public schools are a root of bitterness.

The Catholic religion is a root of bitterness. The New International Version of the Bible is a root of bitterness. The American Standard version of the Bible is a root of bitterness. The National Council of Churches is a root of bitterness. Sodomy is a root of bitterness. These are ALL deadly poisons.

Yes, there are a lot of poisons in our society... we must be diligent to safeguard our loved ones and our selves from them. God help us!

I plead with you whoever you may be to get saved before it's too late! If you sincerely doubt the Scriptures, why Oh why? Why I Believe the King James Bible is the Word Of God. The Bible openly acknowledges that not all men have faith in Jesus Christ. 2nd Thessalonians 3:1-2, “Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you: And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.” Notice that “faith” is synonymous with being reasonable. We are living in crazy times, in which many people are filled with rage, bitterness and are not reasonable at all. Putting urinals in women's restrooms for transgendered men is UNREASONABLE!!!

Woman claims discrimination by SC foster agency over her religion

Author: By MEG KINNARD Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A Catholic mother says a federally funded South Carolina foster agency abruptly stopped working with her and won't allow her to foster children because she's "not the right kind of Christian."

In a federal lawsuit filed Friday, Aimee Maddonna and her lawyers say Miracle Hill Ministries is unconstitutionally discriminating against non-Protestants. The lawsuit challenges a waiver granted this year to the Greenville agency, which previously has come under fire for denying services to same-sex couples and non-Christian families.

Last year, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster requested a waiver exempting the state from an Obama-era regulation preventing publicly licensed and funded foster care agencies from servicing specific religions. That request was granted last month.

But years before Miracle Hill's actions toward non-Christians became an issue, Maddonna says the agency first encouraged her to become a foster parent but then cut off ties when they realized the Simpsonville mother is Catholic and not a "born-again" Protestant, as the agency's rules require.

Maddonna first reached out to Miracle Hill in 2014, when the mother of three decided that it was time to welcome more children into her home. Maddonna, who grew up in a household full of foster children, many with special needs, told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview she wanted her children to be able to develop the same foster sibling bonds she had.

"I wanted to open up my family and my home to kids in need," Maddonna said. "I have the view that every child has the ability to enrich the lives of adults around them, too."

For weeks, Maddonna says conversations continued with Miracle Hill officials, who set up a final interview before she was to be approved as a foster parent. In a conversation ahead of that meeting, Maddonna says she was asked to give the name of her church.

"By the name, you can tell it's a Catholic parish," Maddonna said. She says the Miracle Hill representative "immediately responded back with, 'I'm sorry, we only employ volunteers and mentors who are Protestant Christian.'"

"I've never considered myself a religious minority until that moment," Maddonna said. "I had to tell my kids that, because we're Catholic, we can't take these kids out for ice cream and cheer them on at their games. I was devastated."

In the last fiscal year, Miracle Hill received nearly $600,000 in state and federal funding, the organization's president has said.

Rachel Laser - president and CEO for Americans United for Separation of Church and State, whose lawyers are handling Maddonna's case - says that despite the waiver's specific language concerning Christianity, Miracle Hill is unconstitutionally discriminating against non-Protestants.

"This is a problem that the government has caused. If Miracle Hill were a private entity not accepting state and federal money, then they could decide with their private money whom they served," Laser said. "Aimee isn't the right kind of Christian, so they don't serve her."

Named in the lawsuit are Gov. McMaster, the South Carolina Department of Social Services and the federal Department of Health and Human Services. Spokespeople for McMaster and the federal Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately return messages Friday seeking comment on the lawsuit.

On an online form used to request more information about the foster care program, Miracle Hill describes itself as "a non-denominational, Christian organization based upon a protestant statement of faith." An informational sheet provided to AP describes a viable foster parent as "a born-again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ as expressed by a personal testimony and Christian conduct," going on to note further that the applicant must be an active participant of a protestant congregation.

An online frequently-asked-questions section notes that, while Jews or Catholics "wouldn't be a good fit for Christian leadership roles at Miracle Hill, such as in our foster-care and mentoring programs," the organization can help connect them with other groups where they can serve.

Maddonna recently reached out to Miracle Hill again, to see whether their policy had changed, but she said she received no response.

"When most people think of people being turned away, they think of equally despicable circumstances where a gay couple or a Jewish couple is turned away," Maddonna said. "If you don't protect the rights of everybody, it sets a precedent that will eventually touch on you."

Quote# 142449

For five years I wrote this blog under a pseudonym. It’s not just about me – there are other people whose privacy I’ve felt a need to protect. My children don’t deserve to be hounded for my opinions or choices, many of which they disagree with. And although my ex-husband has told some of his family I don’t think all of them know, and telling them is his prerogative. Also, his parents are elderly and unwell, and they deserve their privacy and peace. Thank you for respecting that.

DH and I grew up together; we dated a year before getting married, while still in our teens. He was the de facto chaplain of our circle of friends, a staunch Baptist, cheerful energetic, confident, strong. He was instrumental in the formation of my Christian faith.

We were married eleven and a half years — hard years, bitter years for both of us. We ought to have been a happy couple. We had all the important things in common: Faith, desire for family, and so on. But we were both miserable from the outset.

When people who knew us ask what happened, why we divorced, I tell them: “You’ve heard of irreconcilable differences? Well, we had a problem with irreconcilable similarities. We both prefer men.”

When I was first going through this, there was no internet, so there were no sources of information or support for women like me. But that summer I met through my work three other women who were going through exactly what I was going through – and all four of us were staunch evangelical Christians in some of the major evangelical churches in our city.

This sort of thing wasn’t supposed to be happening! – but there we were. And more and more of us every year.

Nearly thirty years later, I feel as if I’m still recovering. Sometimes I think I will be for as long as I live. But that’s okay. I’ve survived with my mind and soul intact.

And if I can, we all can.

This is my story. The dominant narrative is, and has been, that only the gay community is courageous and worthy of respect. But I say we former spouses are also courageous, our stories also count. Maybe ours count more; after all, we wed in good faith. Our perspective is important, now more than ever.
